Telling My Stories and Discovering Your Stories
Tom Cat and the Fireman
This photograph by Anton Tushin is a very startling composition. A few people thought it was manipulated in some way.
Let's start with this photograph by Anton Tushin: Fireman and Cat. This photograph was brought to my attention on the How Forum (a gathering of people who focus on graphic design). It was so incredibly breathtaking -- beautiful finesse. Still, it bothered me intensely. I was certain there was no manipulation in it. I wanted to believe that possibly it was photographed on a movie set because, if it wasn't, there was surely a sad story that went with the photo.

It also made me insane that another work of art was, again, being circulated on the Internet without giving credit to the photograph's creator. So, I began to search around here and there. I found that this was a real event and the photographer, Anton Tushin, may be a reporter in Russia.

Once I found where Anton had origianlly posted his photograph online, I started using Google to search and AltaVista's Bable Fish to attempt to get translations. It seems Google can search out Russian (I could copy and paste in the Russian) but Google's translation tools do not included Russian to English. I also used AltaVista's search engine through Bable Fish. Hours later I could understand most of the event.

On the evening of January 20, there was an explosion in this building. There were five stories plus the basement. The basement was used to manufacture furniture. That is where the explosion took place.

The weather was exceedingly cold. The water froze in the hoses and broke the hoses. And firefighter's around the world will recognize the hysterical response of the people who lived there -- they were certain the firefighters were not working hard enough or fast enough. One firefighter was accosted by a woman who was desperate to reach her passport.

When it was all said and done, 20 people were hurt and a young lady who was seven months pregnant and an older lady died.

The young lady worked in the furniture business. The baby was her first child. In the afternoon, her husband stopped by to take home a baby gift -- a blanket. The blanket was wrapped around the young lady when they buried her. (I think it was the next day.)

The doctors say the older lady died from the stress of it all.

I have read nothing about the cat in the news. He is purely a mystery to me.

Anton also posted several series Cat and Fireman alone and Firefighters and the Fire and the People
